Self-Care is defined as the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health. And it’s the practice of taking an active roll in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.
“Why is it important? Self-care encourages you to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself so that you can transmit the good feelings to others. You cannot give to others what you don’t have yourself. While some may misconstrue self-care as selfish, it’s far from that. When you pay adequate attention to your well-being, you’re not considering your needs alone. You’re reinvigorating yourself so that you can be the best version of yourself for the people around you. Everyone around you also benefits from the renewed energy and joy you exhibit.”
There is no doubt that it is important to find time to take care of ourselves. However, when we get stressed out we tend to ignore the very things that make us feel better. Here are some ways to start making self-care a priority:
- Exercise regularly
- Eat healthy foods
- Get enough Sleep
- Spend quality time with the people you love
- Practice relaxation exercises (such as restorative yoga, meditation or tapping)
- Spend time in Nature or on your porch
- Read a book or a magazine
- Engage in a “non-work” hobby
- Be good to yourself
Some suggestions for self-care in the Self-Care section of my Yoga, Mindfulness and Meditation Tool Box are:
- Take a Bath
- Make or Listen to your favorite music
- Talk a Walk
Remember to be mindful of your own needs and participate in any behavior that promotes health and happiness for you! It can be as easy as taking five big deep breaths.
